Which Variable Frequency Drive Is Right for Your Application?

Finding the right variable frequency drive to power your essential processes can be difficult, especially if you don’t know what factors to consider. Keep reading to learn about the elements that determine the best selection for your needs and the options offered by Invention House.

Factors to Consider When Sourcing Variable Frequency Drives

Purchasing the wrong drives for your motor-drive application can create issues that impact a motor’s efficiency, including burnout and problems maintaining speed. Here are some elements to consider when finding the right equipment for your operations:

Incoming Power Supply

One of the biggest determining factors that guide your decision is the power supply to a drive system. You should select a variable frequency drive that’s compatible with a power supply’s voltage, frequency, and current capacity.

Purchasing a drive that doesn’t accommodate the available voltage could create power distribution problems and impact the motor’s efficiency.

Speed Range

A variable frequency drive can cause motors to run too fast or too slow. Underrunning a motor often creates an environment where a fan isn’t moving enough air to keep the motor operational, creating efficiency issues. However, overrunning a motor can cause loss of torque.

Taking the right precautions helps guide your decision and narrows your scope of options.

Environmental Factors

Environmental factors such as heat, cold, humidity, altitude, dust, shock, vibration can have a serious impact on the operation of your variable frequency drive. Most off the shelf drives are built to withstand basic conditions and the strains of shipping. If your motor-drive combination is operating in extreme conditions, make sure the drive is rated for those conditions or more. Mil-spec drives will meet such conditions, because they are designed to meet military operating environments.

Motor-Compatibility

Finally, the most important aspect to consider when finding the right variable frequency drive is motor compatibility. Drives are specified to meet certain motor-type requirements. For example, a single-phase drive will not work on a 3-phase motor, a ½ horse power rated drive won’t work on a 1 horsepower motor, and a drive designed for a conventional motor may not work on a linear electric motor. Check the drive specifications to ensure that iit is designed to work with your motor-type from the start.

Do You Need a Custom-Built Variable Frequency Drive?

Another element to consider when finding the right variable frequency drive for your operations is whether you need a customized product. Many off-the-shelf options struggle to maintain a consistent speed in demanding jobs and challenging conditions. This causes the motor to fail and forces business owners to waste money by ordering more parts.

Here are some signs that you should consider purchasing a custom-built product:

  • You require a high input-output frequency
  • Your operations take place in extreme temperatures
  • You need a high level of continuous vibrations
  • Your staff needs a variable frequency drive that auto restarts and prevents stalls
  • Your business powers in high-altitude locations
  • Your team needs assistance with the overall design and specifications.

Ruggedized Variable Frequency Drives Offered by Invention House

The Invention House team understands the frustrations many companies experience when working with off-the-shelf drives. That’s why we offer American-made and ruggedized variable frequency drives capable of withstanding harsh environments over a wide range of voltage, frequency, and temperatures.

We offer three variable frequency drives designed to meet the needs of multiple industries:

Single-Phase VFD

Industrial processes aren’t static, and companies need a variable frequency drive capable of operating in various environments to maximize productivity and enhance efficiency. Invention House understands these concerns and builds customized 120 volt single-phase VFDs that maintain speeds in challenging conditions. Our selection includes:

SPD-2230 Single-Phase OEM Motor Drive

Our SPD-2230 drive is built on an aluminum flange chassis and conformal coated for enhanced durability. This component is capable of operating in extreme temperatures ranging from -40℃ to 55℃.

The SPD-2230 features function programming and a serial interface and is easily assembled with a connector-based input/output design. Other specifications include:

  • 120/230 VAC – 10 amps rms (2HP)
  • 50/60/400 hz – Up to 25 kHz Output
  • Alodine and Anodized Coatings

SPD-500 Single-Phase OEM Motor Drive

The SPD-500 is a ruggedized single-phase drive designed to support military equipment operating in challenging conditions. This innovative variable frequency drive senses altitude changes and automatically changes operating power to maintain a consistent CFM. Other features include:

  • Tilt sensor
  • Single-phase In/Out
  • 120/150 VAC -amps rms (1/2 HP)

3-Phase Motor Drives

Invention House offers customized 3-phase motor drives for companies that need a greater power density than single phase VFDs can’t provide. This equipment features a chassis format that can be box-type or designed as another configuration to meet specific space requirements.

Our 3-phase motor drives have indoor and outdoor applications, are built to meet strict military-grade compliance standards, allow for enhanced speed control, and have a fault restart feature. Other specifications include:

  • -40℃ to 55℃ temperature operating range
  • Finishes: Alodine or Anodized
  • Withstands 40g shock
  • Withstands 2 grms vibration

400-Hz Motor Drive

Electric motors that power planes, helicopters, and other military aircraft need a variable frequency drive that provides consistent speed. Our ruggedized 400-Hz motor drive is a lightweight component that combines multiple processes and maximizes space for the aerospace and defense industries.

The 400 Hz has an allowable voltage fluctuation of -10% to 10% and offers speed control and fault restart functions for enhanced performance. Other specifications include:

  • 50/60/400hz output
  • Flange for bulkhead mounting
  • Minimal cooling required
  • -40℃ to 55℃ temperature operating range

Why Source Your Variable Frequency Drives From Invention House?

For many business owners, finding the right customized equipment to power their motors can feel like finding a needle in a haystack. Off-the-shelf products are designed to excel in basic environments but lack the durability to excel in challenging conditions.

The Invention House team understands these common issues and works with clients to build customized variable frequency drives that meet their needs. Working with us provides the following benefits:

Experienced

You need to work with an experienced provider if you want the right equipment for your processes. The Invention House team has been building variable frequency drives for over two decades and has designed and manufactured equipment for multiple industries.

Independently Owned

Working with large manufacturing companies limits your ability to customize options because they deal with significant order fulfillment requirements. With Invention House, you’re working with a small and independent company that can meet your specific needs.
